FEBA supports the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) to be observed for the third time on 29 September 2022.

The IDAFLW makes a clear call to action for public and private entities, from across the food system, and consumers, to work together to cut food loss and waste and enhance the efficient use of natural resources, mitigate climate change, and support food security and nutrition.

In 2021 FEBA members in 29 European countries redistributed 907,280 tonnes of food. Approximately 60%* of food is saved from food waste every day, thanks to the collaboration with public authorities, food business operators, and 45,810 charitable organisations that facilitate access to food for more than 11.8 million people in need. The action of the Food Banks is essential to prevent food waste and reduce food insecurity. It is especially in these difficult times that no crumb should be wasted, help us and support your Food Bank!

FEBA at the conference "Together against food waste, together again poverty" in Bucharest

On 29 September, International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, Federația Băncilor pentru Alimente din România organised a conference with institutions, European partners, donors, organisations, members of the Romanian Food Banks, and supporters.

The Federația Băncilor pentru Alimente din România celebrated the impact and results achieved over the past year with all partners and colleagues from our 9 Regional Food Banks in Bucharest, Cluj, Roman, Brasov, Oradea, Timisoara, Constanta, Craiova, and Galati. The conference was also the opportunity to look at the challenges that the humanitarian crisis created by the war in Ukraine has brought to the daily activity of Food Banks as well as the contribution to support Ukrainians. FEBA Secretary General presented the activities and impacts of the network of European Food Banks in 2021. Then the discussion moved to the reviewed European legislation dealing with food donation and also the proposals to amend the national legislative framework in the field of food waste, thanks to the presence of the Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, Florin Alexandru Alexe, and the MP Diana Buzoianu. Through the voice of the partners of the Federația Băncilor pentru Alimente din România such as Lidl Romania, Kaufland Romania, METRO Romania, Auchan, Freshful by eMAG, MEGA IMAGE, Embassy of Sustainability in Romania, the value of partnership and the impact of joint actions on people, environment, society were emphasized. It was stressed that the heart of the mission of Food Banks is people and the importance of collaboration, through the voice of colleagues from Caritas Bucharest, Make Good a Habit and Bread of Life Orphanage and Feeding Centers.

The UN recognizes the importance of reducing food loss and waste. On 19 December 2019, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 74/209 proclaiming an International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. The International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste seeks to promote awareness and collective action to reduce food loss and waste.

Prioritizing the reduction of food loss and waste is critical for the transition to sustainable food systems that enhance efficient use of natural resources, lessen planetary impacts and ensure food security and nutrition.

As the world’s population continues to grow, our challenge should not be how to grow more food; but reducing food loss and waste in a sustainable manner, is an immediate need if we are.

To maximize the use of food produced to feed and nourish more people (FAO, 2019). Good governance, human capital development, collaboration and partnerships are key in maximising the positive impacts of reducing food loss and waste.

In observance of the third International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the FAO is organising a global virtual event taking place on Thursday, 29 September 2022, at 16:00-18:00 CEST (Rome time).

Our food systems are under increasing pressure - besides climate change, crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and conflicts have implications for food security in the EU and worldwide.

Reducing food losses and food waste is a key element in the transition to sustainable food systems. Measures to prevent food waste support the fight against climate change, save nutritious food for human consumption and reduce costs for producers, companies and households. For the EU, food availability is not currently at stake, though food affordability can be an issue for consumers. While an estimated 20% of the total food produced in the EU is lost or wasted, 36.2 million people cannot afford a quality meal every second day. In 2020, the share of the EU population unable to afford a quality meal (with meat, fish or a vegetarian protein alternative) every second day grew by 19.1%, following a steady decrease from 2015 to 2019. (source of data: Eurostat, 2020) To mark the third observance of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) on 29 September 2022, the European Commission is launched communication materials for social media that anyone can use to help us raise awareness about the issue.

Reducing food waste is one of the most impactful climate solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Food waste reduction can help meet the global growing demand for food whilst ensuring that our food system operates within planetary boundaries.

For the EU, food availability is not currently at stake, though food affordability can be an issue for consumers. Food waste prevention brings economic savings for both operators and consumers, at a time when food prices are rising.

While an estimated 20% of the total food produced in the EU is lost or wasted, 36.2 million people cannot afford a quality meal every second day. Reducing food loss and waste can save nutritious food for redistribution to those in need.

Everyone should play a role in reducing foodwaste! Often with minimal effort, food waste can be reduced, saving money and helping to protect the environment.
