Our dream for a better planet without food loss and waste: it is possible

The FAO Brussels Office organised an online conference on the occasion of the first international Day of Awareness on Food Loss and Waste. FAO Liaison Office in Brussels invited FEBA Secretary General Angela Frigo to discuss, together with other high-level speakers, about solutions to the food loss and waste issue highlighting the importance of working together across all actors.
In total, almost 600 participants followed the conference.

Today Food Banks are dreamers because first they are doers. They are an integral part of the food system because they promote the transition from a linear to a circular economy: no good food goes to waste but gains a new value for the people, for the planet.

Inaugural event of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

The first ever observance of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) was held virtually with interventions from the FAO Director-General and UNEP Executive Director, high-level representatives from Argentina, Turkey, San Marino and Andorra, private sector, consumers and academia, among others. The event sparked discussion on the need to transform and rebalance the way our food is produced and consumed, accentuated even more during the global COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to harness and scale-up innovation and technologies to stem the problem.

FEBA President, Jacques Vandenschrik, participated in the panel “Food Loss and Waste and Innovation”.

In total, almost 600 participants followed the conference.

The mission is common to every single Food Bank in the world: rescuing safe and edible food from the food supply chain to ensure that no good food goes to waste and redistributing it to charities helping people in need.
