As part of the Pilot Project: Food redistribution in the EU- Analysis of the existing frameworks and dissemination opportunities, in the morning of 29 September the European Food Banks Federation together with Food Banks in Czech Republic, Estonia, Italy, Malta and Nordic Region (Denmark, Norway & Sweden) organized 5 virtual workshops to disseminate the EU guidelines on food donation in order to better analyze the main challenges and opportunities to foster food donation both at European and national level.
Speakers were public authorities, actors of the food supply chain, and other stakeholders.
Jacques Vandenschrik, President of the European Food Banks Federation and Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, opened the meetings.

With the new European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy we have the great opportunity to strengthen already existing collaborations and recognize food donation and the activity of Food Banks not as a philanthropic option but as an integral part of the food system.
Surplus food should feed people, not go in the bin.

The live dialogue “Food, no Waste: food donation in Czech Republic for the people, for the planet” focused on the current situation in Czech Republic as regards food donation and the challenges for the next period. The goal was to promote the dialogue between the Food Bank, public authorities, players of the food supply chain and final beneficiaries to highlight the main hurdles and strengths.
Food, no Waste: food donation in Denmark, Norway & Sweden, for the people, for the planet
The live dialogue “Food, no Waste: food donation in Denmark, Norway & Sweden for the people, for the planet” discussed Nordic efforts to reduce food waste, food banking in Norway, Sweden and Denmark and the collaboration with the Nordic Food Industry in order to reduce food waste and poverty in the region. The goal was to promote the dialogue between the Nordic Food Banks and the Nordic Food Industry to strengthen cooperation.

Food, no Waste: food donation in Estonia for the people, for the planet
On the occasion of the first International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, Toidupank organised a conference to raise awareness through the society and all the stakeholders on the issue of food waste and how it can be reduced fostering food donation. The conference hosted international and national speaker to widen the understanding of the topics and share best practices.

Food, no Waste: food donation in Italy for the people, for the planet
The live dialogue “Food, No Waste: Food donation in Italy for the people, for the planet!” had the goal to disseminate the EU guidelines on food donation and to promote the dialogue between the European Commission, public authorities, players of the food supply chain and civil society concerning donation of surplus food. 13 speakers participated in the round table, sharing both critical issues and the positive results obtained after three years from the publication of the EU guidelines.

The live dialogue “Food, no Waste: food donation in Malta for the people, for the planet” focused on the current situation in Malta as regards food donation and the challenges for the next period. The goal was to promote the dialogue between Malta Food Bank Foundation, public authorities, players of the food supply chain and final beneficiaries to highlight the main hurdles and strengths.

In the afternoon of 29 September, the event “Save Food, Fight Hunger” was hosted by The Global FoodBanking Network and Champions 12.3, a coalition of public and private sector, as well as civil society that aim to mobilize action and accelerate progress toward achieving the UN SDG Goal 12.3 (Halve Food Loss and Waste), by 2030.
The conference brought together stakeholders from large retail corporations, researchers and social organizations who gave insights in what has been achieved to date, as well as current challenges and opportunities for our food systems. A special focus was given to actions in relation to SDG Goal 12.3 and SDG Goal 2 (Zero Hunger and the need and opportunity to transform our food systems and make them future-proof.
